Project Title : Habitat Use and Overlap of Himalayan Musk deer Moschus chrysogaster with Reference to Habitat Quality and Human Use in Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal
Project Year : 2008/09
Project Leader : Mr. Achyut Aryal
Financial Supported By : EVK 2 CNR, Italy
Abstract of Project:
Himalyan Musk deer in SNP

The Himalayan Musk deer ‘Moschus chrysogaster’ is one of six deer species of Nepal, belongs to Order- Artiodactyla, Family-Moschidae and in Asia, listed as Appendix-1 by CITES and Vulnerable by IUCN.

The proposed study will be investigated habitat use of musk deer with reference to habitat quality and human use. The study will investigate differences in the diet condition of Himalayan musk deer in disturbed and undisturbed areas through dung analysis. Habitat overlap of musk deer with other ungulates is another study aim of the research and habitat overlap’s GIS map will be prepared. The outcome of this research would help the Government of Nepal for the long-term conservation and management of its population. Expected out of the research are: 1). Current status and distribution of musk deer in the study area.2).Diet condition and habitat structure of Musk deer in both disturbed and undisturbed area.3).Understanding habitats overlap between musk deer and others ungulates of the area 4).Understanding the resource competition between musk deer and others ungulates of the area.5). Preparing habitat overlap GIS map of Musk deer and others ungulates of the area.6). Find out the potential musk deer distribution area inside and outside (buffer zone) the area of Sagarmatha National Park.
